Today is a wonderful day for all things British. It is Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee. 60 years on the throne. A good reason to have a celebration.
It must be wonderful to be in England this week. All of the parties, souveniers and celebrations.
The pride I feel for my British heritage today is just bursting at the seams.
I was raised by my wonderful grandparents. My grandmother was British and my grandfather was Norwegian. My great, great, great grandmother had the honour of being one of Queen Victoria's many Ladies in Waiting. My great Grandmother, who I adored and was fortunate enough to have with me until I was 19, was very British.
It is from her that I got my love for British tea, scones, the Union Jack and of course, our Queen. In Canada while I was in school, we stood for God Save The Queen every morning. I was so proud. The do not do that anymore because it is not apparently "politically incorrect".
Well, today is not a day for politics it is a day for celebrating. I am breaking out my Brown Betty Tea pot, the only tea pot that makes a descent cup of tea, and having scones with fresh jam and clotted cream.
I will be raising my cup to Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth the second . Great job on 60 years Ma'am. And.........

ReplyDeleteI adore the UK and her vast tradition(s)! From the first time I set foot in London (and with each visit after) I fell more in love with England, her traditions, history, culture and people. So I was up and about in the wee hours her in the NE USA to catch the last bits of The Grand Celebration!
ReplyDeleteI was saddened to hear of the hospital admit of her dear husband - yet there she was again today, duty placed ahead (as always) of her personal life and concerns.
I've often admired the Queen for truly being on of the 'first women' to pave the way for womankind being taken seriously in many arenas that were male only (or male dominated). She deserves great respect for a wide array of personal traits and public deeds in her six decades of rule.

ReplyDeleteSecondly, you'd be loving it here; we had a 4 day weekend (Monday and Tuesday were bank holidays so extra days off for most people) and there are so many parties it's not even funny! We didn't end up going to any though. The one we'd wanted to go to was today (I think it's still Tuesday with you?) and of course we had to be waiting in for someone, and it would have been almost over by the time they'd been and gone. We didn't want to reschedule because it was someone bringing me a special TV box, and I've been waiting for this since February. We could hear the festivities from a party across the road though (which we never got an invite for). And I had the radio on which was keeping us up to date with things going on, and playing all British music all weekend!
It was such a fun long weekend with all the celebrations going on, I felt quite sad when it all came to an end.
