DO I HAVE A PROBLEM....

I have been redoing the house since putting the Christmas decorations away. Unfortunately, I am one of those people who does ten things at once, it drives my husband crazy. I have been emptying and moving cupboards and pine trunks and have made a discovery about myself. I love stuff but when is enough, enough.

Although I do go through my decorating magazines there are some I just cannot part with. I have my Country Living and Country Homes ( which is no longer published, darn) from the 80's. Is this wrong?

I have way too many sweaters that one person should have. I went through a phase.

Inside of the trunks, which I do not always look in, I found all of the stuff I put away when I find new treasures in antique shops.

I just cannot seem to go past a teacup, coffee mug or teapot that looks interesting without buying it. I buy a lot in thrift shops so we aren't talking money just a little obsession.

Then there are my books. I adore books. Design, cooking, biographies, novels I could go on and on. I have a large book shelf my husband built which is bursting. I have piles on the trunks and in the studio. How could this be a bad thing?

Well, my eyes have been opened. I have loaded a lot up to go to the charity shop tomorrow then I can finish my decorating. I have a new rule. Anything that comes in something has to go out. That does not mean my books. I love my books and they are something I do go back to over and over again.

  2. Thanks for this special post. I ask myself the same questions about how much is enough and whether I have a problem. Like you, I have many collections, multiple projects going at any one time and large, full library. Thinning out is difficult. I'm always afraid that if I get rid of something I will need it again. I do like your new rule--one I think I'll adopt. Happy New Year.

  3. Hi, I don't think I every seen that many sweaters. I, too, have some magazines that I won't part with. My hubby has over 3,000 books in the house, he now has to get rid of some before he brings any in, his office is full too so when he retires, he thinks he is going to have to rent a storage unit. Have a great week

  4. I always feel good when I take a load of stuff somewhere. Feels almost like I'm unburdening myself. Once in awhile there are regrets. But in this tiny house, if something comes in, something's gotta come out!

  5. A constant subject of discussion here, when am I going to let the mister get rid of this and that? I say 'hands off bubba' and he backs down for a couple of weeks and asks again! Well I guess that isn't really a discussion, is it?!!

  9. LOL..so so much like me.. I LOVE books..and have tons of them....can't part with them ...they are like old friends...magazines..I also have ones that are not longer printed..can I let them go? no! I do from time to time purge some of the ones that I find nothing in to use. I bring them to my chiropractors office. That way I can read them if I want to..haha...
But I too have to adopt that rule of nothing comes in until something goes out..boy this is going to be hard!
Hope you can do it too..

  12. You will feel freer when you let some things go. Just don't let the wrong thing go. ;-)
